Saints in Art

From the time of the Roman Empire to the present-day Christian saints are some of the most commonly found subjects in Western art. This course will examine the ways in which they have been depicted in painting and sculpture. Over 10 weeks we will look at how to identify saints by certain symbols, colours, clothing and narratives from early martyrs to vestal virgins to plague saints. The last class will be an exploration of depictions of Saints in Churches and Collections around Ireland.
