Northern Renaissance Art – The 16th Century

This 10-week course will trace the developments in art in the North of Europe. The focus will be on painting, sculpture and the decorative arts. Some of the artists to be discussed are the supremely talent Albrecht Dürer, the wonderfully bizarre Hieronymus Bosch, the master of portraiture Hans Holbein the Younger among many others including a few lesser know women artists like Caterina van Hemessen. This course will primarily look at art produced in Germany, England, Flanders and the Netherlands, and will place the artworks into their historical context, looking at patrons, artists practices as well as economic, religious and other influences. A variety of mediums will be studied from illuminated manuscripts to metal work to oil painting.
