Week 6: Édouard Manet (French, 1832 –1883)
Sometimes called ‘the father of modernism’, Manet certainly can be credited with breaking through the rules of traditional academic art to present works that confronted the viewer in a variety of ways. His influence on the Impressionists is undeniable although he never exhibited with them. He is best known for his shocking and controversial earlier works Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia.
