In-Person: Regency to Early Victorian Art and Architecture
This 10 week course will trace the development of art in the British Isles from 1811 when the Prince of Wales stood in for his father George III, through the reign of George IV and his successor William IV concluding with the early Victorian period. This was the time of great cultural production from the novels of Jane Austen to the poetry of Byron. The art of the day will be considered in relation to these developments and the society it was created by and for, further historical background including the Napoleonic wars will be discussed along with influential French artist such as Élizabeth Vigée-Lebrun. Painting, sculpture, decorative art and architecture will be explored. Artists and architects to be explored include William Blake, Thomas Lawerence, John Nash, Thomas Hope, John Flaxman, William Beechey, JMW Turner, John Constable. Irish art at this time will be examined including works by Daniel Maclise, George Petrie and William Mulready. There will be a visit to the National Gallery of Ireland in person and/or virtually for the last class.
