Itinerary:
Meet everyday at 9:30 am at the Nørreport station
Day 1: Beyond
We will travel north from Copenhagen by train to two incredible art museums.
The Nivaagaard Collection was founded by landowner Johannes Hage, whose private collection was donated to the public as an independent institution in 1908. The museum is located in a large, romantic garden full of beautiful old trees and abundant rhododendrons. At the museum, you can experience art from the Italian and Northern European Renaissance, the Dutch Baroque and Danish 19th century art. The are some real gems in the collection including an incredible large multi figure portrait by Sofonisba Anguissola and a very rare painting by her sister too!
Lunch at the famous Louisiana Café (pay separately)
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, is an art museum located north of Copenhagen. Attracting over 700,000 guests annually, the Louisiana is Scandinavia's most visited museum for modern and contemporary art, hosting 6 to 10 exhibitions each year alongside a permanent display of Gleaming Lights of the Souls by Yayoi Kusama. The setting on the coast and the luscious garden full of modernist sculpture make this a special place. It also possesses one of the best museum shops I have ever visited!
Day 2: Copenhagen
Christian IV’s small favourite castle has an idyllic location, next to the King’s Garden in the heart of Copenhagen. Today, this Renaissance castle houses the Danish crown jewels, which are worn by the sitting queen on special occasions. You can also visit Christian IV’s audience rooms and see his bedchamber, where he passed away, in 1648. In the Treasury beneath the castle, you can see the Danish crown jewels, the magnificent royal crowns and the Crown regalia.
Lunch in one of the many cafes in Parkmuseerne which is Copenhagen’s green museum district. For example Herkules Pavillonen Cafe (Pay separately)
SMK - The National Gallery of Denmark
The National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst) features Danish and international art from the past seven centuries. No other museum in Denmark shows such a rich and varied selection of art – from the European classics of the Renaissance to the overwhelming diversity of modern and contemporary art.
This beautiful museum houses more than 100 years of Danish art from the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century orignally part of a private family collection. The collection includes masterpieces by C.W. Eckersberg, Christen Købke, P.S. Krøyer, Anna Ancher and Vilhelm Hammershøi.
Day 3: Copenhagen
The Glyptotek is the leading antiquities museum in the Nordic countries and also has one of Europe's finest collections of French art from the period 1800-1930. The museum and its buildings have a unique history, which through its founder, brewer Carl Jacobsen, unites art history with industrial history and stands as an important chapter in Danish cultural history around the year 1900.
