Description: With Venice so much in the news lately I thought it might be nice to have a virtual trip to this truly unique city without having to worry about crowds or melting temperatures.
I will provide an introduction to the city history and geography and lead us through the canals to visit some of the most important artworks as well as some of my favourites. The focus will be on artworks still in situ as well as stories about some of the native artists as well as the long history of tourism and its influence. Given that a work by Canaletto recent sold for a record £31.9 million there is clearly a love for the city, its artists and the Grand Tourist era. Other artist to be discussed include residents like Titian, Tintoretto, Carriera, Canova and visitors like Turner and Monet.
